Molecular Characterization Techniques

Gel Permeation Chromatography (GPC)

GPC allows for the determination of number average molecular weight (Mn) and molecular weight distribution (PDI=Mw/Mn) of polymers. This Agilent GPC system with 1260 Infinity Multi-Detector has columns that can run in various solvents such as DMF, THF and DMS and is equipped with viscometer and refractive index detectors. Calibration can be performed with narrow molecular weight polyethylene oxide (PEO) and polystyrene (PS) standards.

Dynamic Light Scattering (DLS)

IMG_6326

Our DLS measures particle and molecule size from below a nanometer to several microns using dynamic light scattering. Particle size range from 0.3 nm to 10 µm can be detected over a temperature range of 2°C to 90°C.

Fluorescence correlation spectroscopy (FCS) and Fluorescence recovery after photobleaching (FRAP)

FCS allows measuring  the diffusion coefficient of the polymer or polymer complex within solution. FCS is capable of detecting and distinguishing between single and multiple component diffusion. FRAP gives information about lateral diffusion within polymer films of orders up to 10-16 cm2/s.
